Cabin CreekCabin Creek Phase II Waste Water Treatment Project: A Small Cities Block Grant Application for $1.5 million was successfully completed.Cabin Creek Health Clinic Expansion: An Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant of $100,000, part of $200,000 project to expand the clinic to Riverside High School was successfully completed. Playground Equipment/Ballfield
Renovations:
The UKVEC contributed to the Starting Points Center's purchase of
preschool playground equipment for Sharon/Dawes Elementary School. We
also contributed to the Cabin Creek Little League Association's
purchase of baseball equipment and safety gear and worked with the
Kanawha County Parks and West Virginia Army National Guard to grade
baseball fields at Gallagher and Sharon/Dawes Elementary
School. Cabin Creek Watershed Van:
The UKVEC coordinated
with the Kanawha County Commission and the Kanawha Valley Regional
Transportation
Authority to supply a passenger van to the watershed for various
activities. MontgomeryMontgomery General Hospital Telemedicine Grant: The UKVEC sought and was granted funding from U.S. Department of Agriculture to construct a communication link between Montgomery General Hospital and several other hospitals and clinics to exchange medical information.Technology Park: The UKVEC
assisted the
Upper Kanawha Valley Economic Development Corporation (UKVEDC) in
acquiring
funds from federal, state, county, and local sources to initiate a
technology
park in the UKV for the creation of business opportunities, job
opportunities, and
training programs. The UKVEC provided
$50,000 toward the acquisition of the property for the development of
the
park. Swimming Pool:
The UKVEC contributed $10,000 for renovations to the city's swimming
pool. ChesapeakePlayground Equipment: The UKVEC assisted Chesapeake Elementary School to raise funds to purchase playground equipment.Chesapeake Human Service Center: The
UKVEC is working with the Region 3 Planning and Development
Council and the city of Chesapeake to establish a human service center.
This center will help meet the health care, transportation, and
weatherization needs of area residents. On January 28, 2003, Governor
Wise awarded the city of Chesapeake a Small Cities Block Grant in the
amount of $340,000 for the Human Service Center project. The city
received $20,000 in legislative digest funding for the project. HandleyHandley YMCA: The UKVEC has worked with the town of Handley, the Region 3 Planning and Development Council and Chapman Technical Services, among others, to demolish the old YMCA building. Following the demolition, a new 4,500 square foot building will be constructed to serve as a community center, police station, fire department office, and provide several other functions to area residents. The UKVEC secured $25,000 from the FY03 Budget Digest for renovations of the Handley YMCA.Summer Youth Program: Four
youth were hired for the summer of 2000 to clean up the Handley YMCA. East BankLiteracy and After-School Program: The UKVEC has assisted Zig Zag Zoom in East Bank with funding to initiate an after school program and a literacy program. In the future, the literacy program will be expanded to several non-profits in the UKV.Former East Bank High School: The UKVEC and the Kanawha County Commission collaborated with the Kanawha County Board of Education to demolish the former school, creating an available development site. The UKVEC, Kanawha County Commission, and BIDCO are working together to construct a new multi-purpose building there for economic development. Return to Top Armstrong CreekArmstrong Creek Water: The UKVEC worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Armstrong Creek PSD to extend water service to area residents.Upper Kanawha Valley Community Center: The UKVEC and the center created a new computer lab for area residents where basic computer classes will be taught. We also support a meal program, which provides daily, nutritional meals to area residents. Return to Top ChelyanBusiness Center Renovation: The UKVEC acquired $858,447 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the construction of an incubator, shell building, and/or demolition projects. With the assistance of the Kanawha County Board of Education and Kanawha County Commission, we then took possession of the former Chelyan Elementary School and turned it into a business and community center. The building is approximately 30,000 square feet and will attract 12-16 businesses with employment between 150-200 persons. The first tenant moved in on April 30, 2002.Return to Top Other UKV ProjectsMarmet: The UKVEC is working with a private land owner on development of former Marmet Junior High into a Business Center. Cedar Grove: 20 computers were contributed to Cedar Grove Elementary School for a computer lab. Glasgow: The UKVEC is working with the town of Glasgow to generate funding for the new senior center. Kelly's Creek: Worked in conjunction with Kelly's Creek watershed association for development of organization and finding grants. Demolition: Over 60 structures have been demolished in the UKV at no cost to the state, county, or municipalities. Fire Department Equipment Funding: Since the UKVEC's inception, we have sought funding from the Small Cities Block Grant program for several volunteer fire departments in the UKV. Local Law Enforcement Block Grant: The UKVEC has worked with the Criminal Justice Department, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, and several police departments in the UKV to submit and acquire funding for equipment and vehicles for better policing of the areas. Training Facility: The UKVEC
assisted Weapons
of Mass Destruction facility located at the Memorial Tunnel by
providing
resources, contacts, and other technical assistance needed to implement
the
training program for emergency first responders. |
